Meta AI Assistant has been announced as one of the company’s latest technologies at a major event. The move launches its own AI assistant and a series of AI characters, poised to make a splash on WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. Let’s dig into what this means for your digital interactions.
Zuckerberg’s Meta recently held an event to announce its new technologies and products to all fans around the world. Meta AI Assistant is one of the new innovations announced at Meta Connect 2023, and today we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about it. Let’s take a closer look at it and see how it will enhance our experience on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram!
What is a meta-artificial intelligence assistant?
Picture this: an AI assistant ready to help you with anything from scheduling group activities to answering pressing questions. If you’ve ever used OpenAI’s ChatGPT or a similar chatbot (such as Anthropic’s Claude), the concept of Meta AI Assistant will be familiar to you.
The goal here is to make your life easier by handling everything from event organization to providing search engine-like results. Notably, Meta partners with Microsoft’s Bing to provide real-time online results, giving it an edge over free AI that lacks up-to-date information.

A picture is worth a thousand words
But Meta AI Assistant is more than just text-based highlights. It can easily generate images using the command “/imagine”. The Verge says it created high-quality photos in seconds during a quick demo, and the best part is this image-making feature is completely free.
While Meta’s vice president of generative AI, Ahmad Al-Dahle, was tight-lipped about the training data, he did note that it was a “custom-made” large language model influenced by Meta’s Llama 2 model. Widespread deployment of Llama 2 enhances the capabilities of AI assistants, improving performance and user experience.
Meta AI Assistant is conversational and friendly
While other AI may appear robotic and unapproachable, meta-AI is built to be conversational and friendly. It has a larger contextual window, which allows it to draw on previous encounters to have more meaningful discussions with people.
Al-Dahle’s team has also fine-tuned the assistant to provide clear and concise answers, ensuring interactions are not only productive but also enjoyable.
Meta AI Characters: A star-studded cast
But the excitement doesn’t stop there. In addition to Meta’s AI assistant, the company has also launched 28 AI characters in its messaging app. Some of them are based on celebrities like Charli D’Amelio, Dwyane Wade, Kendall Jenner, MrBeast, Snoop Dogg and Paris Hilton, while others cater to specific needs like travel plans need. Given Meta’s broad user base, the AI assistant is likely to be many people’s first exposure to chatbot technology.
It’s already launching in the US, with more characters to be added in the coming weeks. Here is the complete list provided by Meta:
- Charlie D’Amelio Playing the role of Coco, a dance lover
